No More Dye :: Embracing my Gray Hair

Ladies,  I have received comments from many of you who say you love my silver hair but don’t think that they could take the leap.  It made me realize how important it  to share my own gray hair story to help change the narrative behind going gray. Making the decison to stop coloring my gray hair after my daugther was born was one of the best decision I have ever made.  If you know me then you know that I am not the type of woman that follows typical beauty trends.  That is why I did not put much thought into how my grays would be received by society when making my initial desicion.  Most women in my circle shy away from letting their grays grow in. Mainly due to the beauty restraints that have been placed on us by soceity.  But I could see how trendy silver hair was becoming.  In one of my favorite style shows What Not To Wear, Stacy London rocked her gray streak.  I’ve seen numerous female celebrities like Carla Hall who also rocked their gray hair looks with confidence.  The only person’s opinion that mattered was mine. I was not even worried about my husbands reaction.  I was sure he would be my number one supporter through this journey.

I have personally dealt with graying roots for a long while, since I was a teenager to be honest. Which means I have been coloring and covering up my grays for over twenty years.  After many years coloring my hair I began to develop an allergic reaction to most at home dyes as well as salon dye’s. This is about the time I stopped coloring my hair in salons and lead me to seek an alternative hair dye long before I became pregnant.  One hypo-allergenic hair dye that became my holy grail of hair dyes is NutureTint. This all natural hair dye can be found at Whole Foods.  I used this hair dye before and after both my pregnancies.  Since it is an all nautral dye it started to become a bit pricey for an at home dye I was using every two weeks.  That is why once my second child arrived and I found that I had way less time on my hands.  Coloring my roots every two weeks was just not something I could find myself keeping up with.  In the effort to save myself time (and money ) I made the decision to embrace my grays.

Yes, I was over the constant upkeep my grays!  I love how my grays act as a natural highlight in my curls.  I still get the constant stares and questions about my gray hair.  Is it real?  Did you dye it that color?  Most of the time these questions always catch me off gaurd.  Mainly because these questions all stem from antiquated beauty standards most of us hold ourselves to.  But why is going gray so unnatural for women?

My hair self love journey began also when I began embracing my natural curls a few years ago. I began questioning whose beauty standards was I living by?  At that time it was the coporate world and societies image of natural curls that drove my decision to straigthen my natural curls. When I made the decision I went from a regular weekly blowout to re-learning how to care for my natural curls.  That process was long, frustrating but now I enjoy my natural curls and love them.  When I came to the decision to embrace my grays I was hundred percent aware that the process would be pretty similar.  However with any goal we set for ourselves it takes hard work to see results.  I am nearing the end on growing out most of color from my hair.  With one more cut it will all be gone and I’ll be left with salt & pepper until the grays are in full effect.  I am so excited for that stage of my silver hair journey.  For any of you ladies who have doubts about embracing your grays.  I’ll be the first to tell you that Gray hair is SEXY! Gray hair is BEAUTIFUL!  I have rocked my gray hair for over two years now and there has never been a day that I felt old.  The truth is feeling beautiful, sexy, and youthful doesn’t have anything to with the color of your hair.  It is comes from how confident you are in YOURSELF.
